PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent tilting of an anvil assembly.SOLUTION: An anvil assembly 10 comprises: a center rod assembly 14 and a head assembly 12 including a housing, a backup member 20, and a retaining member 27. The backup member is movable from a first position, in which a portion of the backup member is positioned to prevent pivotal movement of the head assembly from a non-tilted position to a tilted position, to a second position, in which the backup member is positioned to permit pivotal movement of the head assembly in relation to the center rod assembly from the non-tilted position to the tilted position. The retaining member includes a body portion and a frangible portion that is connected to the body portion.
