Phosphate binding materials and compositions comprising them which are solidligand-modified polyoxo-hy-droxy metal ion materials are disclosed that are based on ferric ironoxo- hydroxides modified with carboxylic acid ligands, orionised forms thereof. These materials are made and tested in the examplesprovided in the application to demonstrate that theycan bind phosphate in "in vitro" an in "in vivo" studies. They are useful fortreating hyperphosphatenia or for removing phosphatefrom a medium.
