The present invention discloses phosphate binding materials and compositions comprising the same, which are solid, ligand-modified polyoxo-hydroxy metal ion materials based on carboxylic acid ligands or their ionic forms modified by ternary iron oxo-hydroxides. These materials are prepared and tested in the examples provided herein to demonstrate that they are capable of binding to phosphates in "in vitro" and "in vivo" studies.
