A phototherapy apparatus 1, with one or more source of thermal irradiation to elevate the temperature of a treatment area of the skin of a subjected to stimulate the axon reflect and initiate vasodilation, one or more source of phototherapeutic irradiation with a peak wavelength to activate a photo response of a target photoreceptor in the skin, a modular housing 2 and a controller for selecting illumination of the treatment area by the thermal or phototherapeutic irradiation. Each module may have a square array of different types of LED, each type of LED providing different sources of radiation. The apparatus may be used in a method of treating or preventing a skin disorder, such as acne, rosacea or eczema in an animal or human subject, or for cosmetic purposes to reduce wrinkles.
