Disclosed are peptides having 4 to 6 amino acid residues bearing biological activity. This peptide consists of a short fragment of peptide HB-107 (MPKEKVFLKIEKMGRNIRN), which itself is a fragment of the antimicrobial protein, secretin B, and exhibits cellular stimulation and migration properties. The peptides of the invention comprise 4 to 6 contiguous amino acid residues located between positions 11 and 16 of HB107 (MPKEKVFLKIEKMGRNIRN), i.e. EKMGRN. The disclosed peptides include agents useful for the treatment of skin injuries, for example, diabetic ulcers. Peptides are also effective in preventing and reversing skin surface damage resulting from a variety of environmental impairments. Importantly, the therapeutic effect of the peptides appears at the same or higher concentration than peptide HB-107 and thus represents a less expensive, more flexible means for developing effective therapies.
