The stiffening arrangement is configured to support at least a portion of the tether to allow the user to direct a clasp (70) located at one end of the tether for attachment to a collar worn by an animal. In at least one configuration, the stiffening arrangement is configured to flex under an applied force. For example, it may have sufficient flexibility to allow the user to coil up the stiffening arrangement when the lead is not in use and/or to provide an animal attached to the tether freedom of movement.
