A method of registering an imaging detector on a surface projects and records a sequence having a first sparse pattern of lines and a second sparse pattern of lines following it. A first subset of positions receives a line from both the first and second sparse patterns corresponding to the first label. The second subset of positions receives only the lines from the first sparse pattern corresponding to the second label. The third subset of positions receives only the line from the second sparse pattern corresponding to the third label. The first, second and third labels are decoded and each member element of the first, second and third subset of positions is registered with the imaging detector according to the decoded label. At least one densest pattern of lines that are positionally correlated with the registered member elements of the decoded label is projected and recorded.
