The present invention is related to a composition containing pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA) and at least one metallic salt, preferably a copper, zinc or manganese salt, more preferably a copper salt, and at least one physiologically acceptable excipient. Said composition displays antiviral and/or antibacterial activity. Embodiments of the present invention comprise, for example, a hand sanitizer spray, an intimate cleansing wash, a wet wipe sanitizer, a barrier cream and a nasal spray.
