An acidic aqueous composition having a pH of 1-4 for elimination of spores of spore forming bacteria, comprises 100-2000 ppm dissolved chlorine dioxide and a surfactant system having wetting effect and a spore solubilising effect, wherein the surfactant system comprises at least two hydrocarbon ionic surfactants stable for oxidation at the acidic pH, of which at least two surfactants have a difference in hydrocarbon chain length of at least four carbon atoms. Preferably the two or more surfactants are present in an amount of 0.01-2% (v/v) and may be cationic or anionic surfactants. Also claimed is the method of eliminating spores by administrating a sufficient amount of the composition to a surface. Preferably the spore forming bacteria belongs to the genus Clostridium, and in particular is Clostridium difficile.
