PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flexible endoscope which permits a bending shape-retaining function having required strength to be granted to a required range of a flexible insertion portion and can be surely and easily switched to the condition where the insertion portion passively changes its shape in response to an external force and the condition where the insertion portion can stably retain the shape and vice versa.
SOLUTION: The flexible endoscope is structured so as to increase frictional resistance acting on shape-retaining operating wires 15 in the portions in connect with wire guide holes 91 with an increase in a tensile force applied to the shape-retaining operating wires 15 by varying the axial direction or the axial position between the wire guide holes 91 arranged in a joint wheel 7 and the wire guide wire holes 91 provided adjacently thereto in a serial direction. When every shape-retaining operating wire 15 is pulled from a base end side, frictional resistance between each of the shape-retaining operating wires 15 and the wire guide holes 91 increases in response to an increase in a tensile force applied to the shape-retaining operating wires 15 and permits a bending shape-retainable tube portion 11 to retain the bending shape.
