The present invention relates to recombinant nucleic acids and polypeptides encoding collagenase I and collagenase II, methods for preparing them and methods for their use. The present invention also provides a method for detecting secretion of hemolytic toxin by a bacterial producer producing collagenase and the presence of hemolytic toxin in the collagenase composition prior to therapeutic administration of said collagenase to a patient.
