A sunless tanning composition comprising 0.1-20 % by weight of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and 0.1-10 % by weight of caramel chosen from Class IV (DSL4, also known as E150D) caramel colorants. The Class IV caramel colorant may comprise less than 30 ppm 4-methylimidazole. Further Class I (SC105, also known as E150A) and/or Class III (P600, also known as E150C) can be added to the composition. The composition may comprise 13.5 % by weight of DHA and 1.24 % by weight of DSL4 with either 0.23 % by weight of P600 or 5.23 % by weight of SC105. Further extracts may be added to 0.2-2.0 % by weight and these may be chosen from extracts of beet, rosemary, turmeric, annatto, saffron, purple sweet potato, and carrot.
