A pointer device is moved along a periphery of an article to be measured, the article being placed on a surface comprising markings providing datum points. Digital image data is captured along a line on the surface indicated by the pointer device. At least one measurement of the article is then determined based on the captured digital image data. The disclosed invention is particularly for the purpose of determining size of feet for footwear. The pointer device may be a pen-like element such as a writing or marker pen, or alternatively a laser pointer or a cross hair may be provided on the lens of the camera. The datum points may be a predetermined pattern of dots, shapes and/or lines on the surface.
