The present invention includes an oxidant selected from sodium, potassium, magnesium or calcium hypochlorite, chlorite or chlorate, an artemisinin composition or derivative, or a combination thereof as the primary active oxidant. It relates to various compositions, including pharmaceutical compositions. The main active oxidants are hypochlorite ion or hypochlorous acid, chlorite ion or chlorous acid, chlorate ion or chloric acid, neutral or ionic chlorine dioxide, or hypochlorite, and chlorite. It provides a solvent or a water-soluble or water-dispersible form capable of releasing or generating, respectively, a chlorate or other derivative thereof from a chlorate in a solvent medium. Used or administered to a warm-blooded mammalian subject to be treated to combat a pathogenic infection or infiltration, and more particularly to combat an infection or infiltration typified by a systemic pathogenic invasion of the subject. The resulting oral or other body cavity dosage form of the composition is described. The composition generally provides to a patient in need of treatment a mixed product having a concentration of the mixed active agents sufficiently low to render such an aqueous medium pharmaceutically acceptable. Is admixed with a suitable amount of one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients or carriers, or other active agents. A unit dosage form is described which may include a carboxylic acid to facilitate the generation of chlorine dioxide or hypochlorous acid. Similarly, the composition may include substantial proportions of carbonates or bicarbonates and lesser amounts of chloride.
