A protective enclosure 10 for one or more seeds 15 comprises an outer shell 11, said shell being permanently or temporarily liquid-impermeable in at least one direction, and a hygroscopic material 14 contained within the shell surrounding at least one seed, said material being capable of absorbing and storing liquid. The protective enclosure provides a self-contained environment for protecting the seeds in their early growth stages in and or hostile environments.
