An effective sterile barrier interface between a remotely operated actuator of a surgical system and a surgical instrument controlled by the actuator is provided. An instrument sterile drape includes a plastic sheet and a pouch sealed in a first opening in a plastic sheet. The pouch is shaped to fit around the carriage containing the actuator. An instrument aseptic adapter (ISA) 510 is connected to the second opening in the pouch. A stiffener may be connected to the pouch around the second opening to provide a relatively inelastic area corresponding to the portion of the pouch held between the bottom and top plates. A portion of the bottom plate may project through the top plate to provide a reference surface for receiving a surgical instrument. The ISA may include a loose pin that depresses a sensing pin in the carriage when the surgical instrument is installed.
