The instrument sterilization drape comprises a plastic sheet and a pouch that is sealed to the first opening of the plastic sheet. The pouch is shaped to fit around the carriage including the actuator. The instrument sterilization adapter (ISA) is connected to the second opening of the pouch. The ISA includes a bottom plate and a steady plate that are positioned together on both sides of the pouch and joined together. The stiffener may be connected to the pouch around the second opening to provide a relatively inelastic region corresponding to a portion of the pouch being held between the bottom plate and the steady plate. The portions of the bottom plate may protrude through the steady plate to provide a reference surface for receiving the surgical instrument.
