A method comprising the steps of: obtaining data showing the acoustic characteristics of the heart during cardiac cycles; identifying the first heart tone of the acoustic characteristics of the heart corresponding to the terminal systole; generating a finite systolic imaging trigger signal based on the identified first heart tone; prospectively gating data acquisition with respect to the end-systolic imaging trigger signal to obtain the first cardiac imaging data corresponding to the first the predetermined interval of obtaining data from the beginning of the diastole; identify the second cardiac tone of the acoustic characteristics of the heart corresponding to the final diastole; form the end-diastolic imaging trigger signal based on the identified second heart tone; prospectively gating data acquisition with respect to the end-diastolic imaging triggering signal obtain second cardiac imaging data corresponding to a second predetermined data acquisition interval from the onset of systole; and post-processing the first and second cardiac imaging data based on at least the end-systolic imaging trigger and the end-diastolic imaging trigger. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein only the first imaging data and the second cardiac imaging data are obtained. The method of claim 1, wherein the first cardiac tone corresponds to closing the aortic valve. The method of claim 3, wherein the second cardiac tone corresponds to the closure of the mitral valve.
