This disclosure discloses an articulating surgical instrument or tool whichhas a channel for an optical fiber and suction to enable articulated suctionandlaser delivery. Rotation of a piece connected to the handle allows forarticulation ofthe tip of the instrument. The assembly utilizes a notched tube compliantwrist jointto be single-handedly articulated during minimally invasive surgery. The jointincludes a contact-aided compliant notch topology built into the elongateflexibleshaft configured to cause the joint to mechanically interfere with itself andself-reinforce during bending of the elongate flexible shaft resulting in anincrease instiffness of the joint to prevent buckling and plastic deformation of theelongateflexible shaft assembly, and assume a predetermined and designed bendingshape of the elongate flexible shaft assembly.
