The disclosure relates to monitoring soil properties during an agricultural input application. Example embodiments disclosed include a monitoring system (300) for an agricultural implement (10) having a plurality of row units (200), comprising: a soil temperature sensor (360) associated with at least one of the plurality of row units (200) and configured to measure a soil temperature at a lower portion of a trench (38) opened by the at least one of the plurality row units (200); processor (2405) in electrical communication with said soil temperature sensor (360); a display (1700) in electrical communication with said processor (2405), said display (1700) displaying said measured soil temperature; and a seed firmer (410) disposed to firm seeds in said trench (38), a lower portion of said seed firmer (410) resiliently contacting a bottom of said trench (38) and capable of firming seeds into the bottom of said trench (38), wherein said soil temperature sensor (360) is mounted to said seed firmer (410) and is in contact with a lower portion of said trench (38).
