An extensible translational sheath is introduced which is introduced into the body at the first small cross-sectional area and then at least a portion of the distal end of the sheath extends to form a second enlarged cross section. The distal end of the sheath is maintained in a first small cross-sectional configuration and is expanded using a radial expansion device.
