To provide a method for selectively and clearly displaying a desired observation object by approximating an outline of a subject region using a plurality of geometries.SOLUTION: A medical image processing apparatus comprises: an image acquisition unit 21 for acquiring a plurality of tomographic images； a color map acquisition unit 24 for acquiring a color map； a voxel creation unit 27 that by referring to the color map, converts a signal value of each pixel of the tomographic images to a color value and opacity corresponding to the signal value to create voxel data holding the color value and opacity； a rendering unit 28 for generating a volume rendering image on the basis of the voxel data； a subject region extraction unit that for each tomographic image, extracts a subject region of the tomographic image； and a geometric information acquisition unit that for each tomographic image, approximates an outline of the extracted subject region using a plurality of geometric shapes to acquire information on the plurality of geometric shapes.
