A portable level sensor for a flexible bag such as a stoma bag or urine collection bag, comprising a flexible resistor element 10 with an electrical resistance that changes in dependence upon its degree of flexing, means 12, 13 for attaching the resistor element 10 to an outside surface of the flexible bag 11 and means for periodically polling the electrical resistance of the resistor element and transmitting to a receiver a signal which varies in dependence on the said electrical resistance. There may be an accelerometer programmed to generate a signal corresponding to the orientation of the flexible bag. An alarm may be generated upon a decrease in the content level of the flexible bag being detected.
