PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition and a method for improving joint health in animals (Canis familiaris or Felis domesticus).SOLUTION: The invention provides a method for improving or decreasing cartilage abnormalities and preventing cartilage degradation in an animal by administering a composition containing a combination of at least one sulfur-containing amino acid and manganese. The sulfur-containing amino acid is selected from D-methionine, L-methionine, DL-methionine, D-cysteine, L-cysteine, DL-cysteine, D-cystine, L-cystine, DL-cystine, S-adenosylmethionine, alpha-hydroxy analogs of methionine, beta-hydroxy analogs of methionine, methionine manganese, and mixtures thereof.
