A lift (10) attachable to a vehicle includes a platform assembly (14) for raising and lowering a load relative to the vehicle. A bridge plate (26) is provided for bridging the gap between the platform assembly (14) and the vehicle when the platform assembly (14) is raised to be level with the vehicle floor. The platform assembly (14) is made up of two foldable platform leaves (2224). The lift (10) comprises a mechanism (110) for automatically rotating the bridge plate (26) relative to the platform assembly (14) so that when the bridge plate (26) is no longer required to bridge the gap between the vehicle and the platform assembly (14), the bridge plate (26) can be rotated into a vertical position to act as a guard to prevent a load moving off the platform assembly (14) unintentionally.
