The present invention is generallydirected to accommodative intraocular lenses (10, 18)that exhibit a dynamic spherical aberration as a functionof accommodative power. By way of example, in oneaspect, the present invention provides an intraocularlens (10) having an anterior optical element (12), aposterior optical element (14), and a mechanism (16) forcoupling the anterior and posterior elements so as toallow axial movement of those elements relative to oneanother for providing accommodation when the lens isimplanted in a patient's eye. Each of the anterior andthe posterior elements includes at least one asphericalsurface, where the asphericities of the surfaces areadapted to provide a combined spherical aberration thatvaries with accommodation.
