The present invention relates to a drug delivery device for dispensing of a liquid medicament, the device comprising: -a housing (20) to accommodate a cartridge (40) filled with the medicament and having a piston (44) slidably displaced inside the cartridge (40) along an axial direction (1, 2) and sealing a proximal end (42) of the cartridge (40), -a drive mechanism (11) having a piston rod (12) extending along the axial direction (1, 2) and being at least displaceable from a proximal end position (P) in distal direction (1) to displace the piston (44) in distal direction (1), -at least one distal support(50, 60) facing in proximal direction (2) to axially abut a distally facing support face (48, 49) of the cartridge (40), -wherein an axial distance (D) between the distal support (50, 60) and a distal end (13) of the piston rod (12) when in the proximal end position (P) is smaller than an effective length (L) of the cartridge (40), which effective length (L) is determined as the axial distance between a proximal face (46) of the piston (44) and the distally facing support face (48, 49).
