It is disclosed a compartment (10) of a refrigerator for storage of fruits and vegetables provided with a photo-catalytic element (16) combined with an array of UV lamps (20) that promote the conversion of ethylene released by fruits and vegetables to carbon dioxide and water. The ripening process is thus controlled by both removing ethylene and producing carbon dioxide, whereby the freshness of fruits and vegetables is extended and/or preserved.
