The invention relates to a method for determining the probability of a metastasis developing in a cancer patient, as well as a method for designing a personalised therapy for a cancer patient, in particular a patient with breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer or thyroid cancer, based on determining the expression level of one or more genes of which the expression is modulated by an increase in the expression of c-MAF. The invention also relates to a method for identifying marker genes that identify a predisposition to cancer metastasis based on the induction of the modulation of the expression of c-MAF'. The invention further relates to the use of PTHLH and PODXL inhibiting agents and to RERG activating agents in the treatment and/or prevention of the metastasis of a cancer, particularly breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer or thyroid cancer.La presente invención se refiere a un método in vitro para predecir el riesgo de metástasis en un sujeto que padece cáncer de mama, caracterizado porque comprende determinar el nivel de expresión de un gen cuya expresión se modula en respuesta a un aumento en el nivel de la expresión de c-MAF en una muestra del sujeto, en donde un nivel de expresión modulado del gen con respecto a un valor de referencia es indicativo de un riesgo aumentado del desarrollo de metástasis, y en donde el gen cuya expresión se modula en respuesta a un aumento en el nivel de expresión de c-MAF es CD36.
