The invention relates to a method comprising: fermenting a low molecular weight sugar utilizing a fermenting microorganism, in the presence of oxidized fibrous biomass, to a product other than a sugar. In one embodiment the fibrous biomass has been oxidized by a method selected from the group consisting of radiation, chemical oxidation, sonication and pyrolysis.
