The present invention relates to a composition for promoting mitochondrial synthesis, which comprises azelaic acid as an active ingredient. It has been confirmed that the azelaic acid, as a compound which is mainly contained in natural products including cranberry, cereals such as wheat, oats, barley, sorghum and rye and the like, has an advantage of having no side effects or less side effects, and has activities of ultimately increasing density of mitochondria by inducing mitochondrial autophagy within cells and DNA synthesis of mitochondria. Therefore, the azelaic acid can be used in treatment of diseases related to deterioration of mitochondrial function according to mitochondrial homeostasis adjusting failure such as reduction in mitochondrial activities or the number of mitochondrion. Further, the azelaic acid can be provided to uses for strengthening muscle function and preventing muscle aging by using the activities. Therefore, the azelaic acid can be useful in a food material, a pharmaceutical composition and a health functional food for treating the diseases related to deterioration of mitochondrial function, strengthening muscle function or preventing muscle aging.COPYRIGHT KIPO 2020본 발명은 아젤라산을 유효성분으로 포함하는 미토콘드리아 합성 촉진용 조성물 등에 관한 것으로서, 아젤라산은 밀, 귀리, 보리, 수수, 호밀 등 곡류와 크랜베리 등 천연물에 주로 함유되어 있는 화합물로서 부작용이 없거나 적다는 이점이 있으며, 세포 내 미토콘드리아의 자가소화작용 및 미토콘드리아 DNA 합성을 유도하여 궁극적으로 미토콘드리아의 밀도를 증가시키는 활성이 있음을 확인하였는바, 미토콘드리아 활성, 또는 미토콘드리아의 수 감소 등 미토콘드리아의 항상성(homeostasis) 조절 실패에 따른 미토콘드리아 기능 저하 관련 질환의 치료에 이용될 수 있다. 또한, 상기 활성을 이용하여 근육 기능 강화 및 근육 노화 방지를 위한 용도에 제공될 수 있으며, 이에 본 발명에 따른 아젤라산은 미토콘드리아 기능 저하 관련 질환 등의 치료, 근육 기능 강화, 또는 근육 노화 방지를 위한 식품소재, 의약조성물, 및 건강기능성 식품에 유용하게 이용할 수 있다.
