Compositions and methods for enhancing the diaphragm function of a patient are provided. In some embodiments, the methods comprise administering to the patient an effective amount of a skeletal muscle troponin activator, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or contacting the diaphragm muscle fibers. Similarly, compositions and methods for increasing the function, activity, efficiency, sensitivity to calcium or time to fatigue of the skeletal muscle in the diaphragm are also provided.
