PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively operate an endoscope without thermal trouble at the distal end of a scope and without complicated operation.

SOLUTION: The automatic dimming process is performed by opening/closing a diaphragm based on the luminance Y of the image of a subject (S101). If the full open state of the diaphragm is continued for a prescribed period T0 (30 seconds), the diaphragm is closed to a prescribed opening K0 and this state is retained (S105). After that, if the luminance Y reaches a reference luminance Y0, the automatic dimming process is restarted (S106 and S107).
