PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for automatically segmenting a cartilage in a magnetic resonance image are provided to adaptively use brightness information and shape template according to appearance information in a patch by locally dividing an object.CONSTITUTION: A patch is generated around a boundary between an extracted bone and a cartilage(210). A segmentation is performed by using shape information and appearance information of the bone in each patch(220). The cartilage is obtained from the surface of the bone(230). A representation point is extracted among all boundary points.
