Methods, compositions, and kits for generating functional chondrocytes, skeletal cells, bone marrow stromal cells, and their progenitor cells are provided. These methods, compositions and kits can be used for chondrocytes, osteoblasts, stromal cells, and their precursors, such as for transplantation, for experimental evaluation, as a source of lineage and cell-specific products. It finds use in generating cells in vivo or in vitro, for example in treating human disorders of the cartilage, bone and hematopoietic system.
