The present invention provides an antimicrobial composition comprising an aqueous solution containing copper ions and / or zinc ions, optionally a hydroxide salt, and phosphorous acid. When combined with a nitrite such as sodium nitrite, the composition is further sporicidal and bactericidal. The present invention may include chemicals containing phosphite or phosphonate groups (PO33-) that can inhibit sclerotial formation at concentrations that can be readily achieved in agricultural applications. The composition of the present invention may be used in the field of preventing the survival and development of pathogenic fungi from inhibiting fungal nucleation by fungi.
