A regional anaesthesia injection apparatus 1 comprising an injection volume determiner (16, figure 2) and an injection pressure determiner (20, figure 2). A controller is coupled to the injection volume determiner and to the injection pressure determiner and configured to provide an injection signal to control injection of fluid into the target tissue based on the determined pressure and the determined volume. Prior to injection the controller is operable in an aspiration mode to identify a reduction in pressure associated with attempting to aspirate a volume of fluid from the tissue. The apparatus can issue an audible or visual alarm if the detected pressure-volume characteristics depart from a stored profile by more than a threshold amount. There may be multiple stored profiles for different types of injection. The detected pressure-volume characteristic may be displayed on a visual display. Delivery of the anaesthetic and aspiration can be controlled by buttons 7a, 7b on the handle 3b of the anaesthetic needle.
