A method for improving and regenerating the lasting antimicrobial activity of the surface of an article, wherein said method comprises the steps in sequence of: a. provide, on the surface of an article on which a lasting antimicrobial activity is desired, a polymer doped with a metal derivative, b. exposing the doped polymer with a metal derivative to a source of aqueous hydrogen peroxide for a sufficient time to allow an amount of hydrogen peroxide to be sequenced in an antimicrobial enhancer form therein, and subsequently, c. removing the source of aqueous hydrogen peroxide, wherein said metal derivative comprises 1% to 50% (w / w) of the weight of the doped polymer, wherein said metal derivative is a hydroxide, an oxide, or a peroxide of a metal selected from the group consisting of zinc, magnesium, titanium and zirconium, wherein said polymer doped with said metal derivative has been determined as capable of sequestering hydrogen peroxide when exposed to said source of aqueous hydrogen peroxide; whereby said antimicrobial activity, when tested using the ASTM E2180 Standard Method at least 24 hours after said removal of the hydrogen peroxide source, provides at least a greater 3 log reduction of viable Escherichia coli bacteria than that of a corresponding surface of said polymer doped with said metal derivative that has not been exposed to hydrogen peroxide, characterized in that the water absorbency of said polymer is between 0.5% and 20% (w / w).Un método para mejorar y regenerar la actividad antimicrobiana duradera de la superficie de un artículo, en el que dicho método comprende las etapas en secuencia de: a. proporcionar, sobre la superficie de un artículo sobre el que se desea una actividad antimicrobiana duradera, un polímero dopado con un 5 derivado metálico, b. exponer el polímero dopado con un derivado metálico a una fuente de peróxido de hidrógeno acuoso durante un tiempo suficiente para permitir que se secuestre una cantidad de peróxido de hidrógeno
