The present invention relates to new aliphatic prolinamide derivatives of the formula I and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts, solvates, salt solvates and prodrugs useful for prevention (for example, delaying the onset or reducing the risk of development) and treatment (for example, controlling, alleviating or slowing the progression) of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and related eye diseases. These diseases include dry AMD, wet AMD, geographic atrophy, diabetic retinopathy, preterm retinopathy, polyphoid choroidal vasculopathy, and retinal or photoreceptor cell degeneration. The invention disclosed in the present disclosure further relates to methods of preventing, slowing down the development and treatment of dry AMD, wet AMD, and geographical atrophy, diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, polypoid choroidal vasculopathy, and degeneration of retinal or photoreceptor cells, including the administration of a therapeutically effective amount of the compound according to the invention. The compounds of the invention are inhibitors of HTRA1. Thus, the compounds of the invention are useful for the prevention and treatment of a wide range of diseases mediated (fully or partially) by HTRA1.
