Disclosed herein is a pharmaceutical composition comprising (R)-5-[3-methylamino-prop-(E)-ylidene]-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-10-ol ( also referred to as (-)-E-10-OH-NT )and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, carrier and/or diluent, wherein said (-)-E-10-OH-NT is present in an enantiomeric excess of at least about 90%. Said composition is useful in the treatment of pain, in particular inflammatory pain, neuropathic pain, pain which is of nociceptive or non- nociceptive origin. Furthermore, the composition is also useful for treating a disorder that is responsive to treatment with amitriptyline or nortriptyline, such as urinary disorders, mood disorders, cognitive disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, eating disorders chemical dependencies resulting from addictions to drugs or substances of abuse, withdrawal syndromes, endocrine disorders, impulse disorders, tic disorders, gastrointestinal tract disorders, vascular disorders, somatoform disorders, Parkinsons disease, shock, hypertension, sexual dysfunction, pre-menstrual syndrome and fibromyalgia syndrome.
