The present invention relates to a pharmaceutically acceptable herbal formulation for treating diseases of mouth and to maintain oral hygiene is disclosed. The formulation comprises of extracts of at least one part of Croton bonplandianum and Sida cordata. The parts of Croton bonplandianum and Sida cordata include latex and roots of Croton bonplandianum and leaves of Sida cordata or any other part(s). The formulation further comprises of at least one pharmaceutically acceptable excipients selected from the group consisting of binder, diluent, sweetener, gelling agent, abrasive, foaming agent, flavoring agent and preservative as a carrier. The formulation is formulated in a delivered system in the form of paste, gel, solution, gargle, powder or impregnated dental floss. Advantageously, the herbal formulation prevents and treats plaque, gingivitis, plaque induced gingivitis, toothache and/ or dental caries.
