The present invention provides a method of measuring the selectivity of an anesthetic to an anesthetic-sensitive receptor by measuring the molar water solubility of the anesthetic. The present invention further provides a method of modulating the anesthetic's selectivity to anesthetic-sensitive receptors by altering or modulating the anesthetic to have a higher or lower solubility.
