The present invention provides a method for determining the selectivity of an anesthetic agent to an anesthetic-sensitive receptor by measuring the molar water solubility of the anesthetic agent. The present invention further provides a method of modulating the selectivity of an anesthetic agent to an anesthetic-sensitive receptor by altering or modulating an anesthetic agent to have higher or lower solubility.
