An ophthalmic device comprising an applanation tonometer chip having a double curved corneal contact surface structured to minimize intracorneal stress and a method of using such device for intraocular pressure measurement . The corneal contact surface includes a first central portion and a second portion that surrounds the first central portion and is adjacent to the first central portion. The curvature of the first part and the curvature of the second part have opposite signs. In some cases, the first central portion can be rotationally symmetric. In a related case, the first part has a curvature with a sign opposite to the sign of the general corneal curvature, while the curvature of the second part has a sign equal to the sign of the corneas curvature .
