585960 Disclosed is a storage apparatus which may be used as a feed container for animals. The container has a receptacle (1) having an open top (11), in use, for access into the interior of the receptacle (1). A lid (2) is able to cover the open top (11), in use, and has a horizontal pivot axis (5) at or adjacent the open top (11). The lid (2) has balance means (4, 6) such that when the lid (2) is in a closed position a counter-moment exerted by the balance means (4, 6) about said pivot axis (5) is selectable to reduce the force needed to open the lid (2) were the balance means (4, 6) absent. The centre of gravity of the lid (2) is at a fixed distance from the pivot axis (5) when the lid (2) is closed. As the lid (2) is raised, in use, the rotation moment of the weight of the lid (2), acting through the centre of gravity of the lid (2), about the pivot axis (5), and tending to close the lid (2), changes at a different rate than a counter-moment of the balance means (4, 6) acting through its centre of gravity, about the pivot axis (5). The construction and arrangement is such that the lid (2) requires progressively more force to raise it when the force (F) to lift it is applied at or near an edge of the lid (2) furthermost from the pivot axis (5).
