A composition is provided, where the composition comprises an artificially structured material and an excipient, where the composition is a coating for an organism capable of photosynthesis and incident light that is photosynthetically active is at least partially transmitted through the composition, whereas incident light that is not photosynthetically active is at least partially absorbed, reflected, emitted, or scattered by the composition.
