An apparatus 10 for roasting coffee beans comprises: a chamber 12 in which a supply of coffee beans can be received for roasting means 15 for heating air and means 20 for driving heated air into the chamber for roasting the coffee beans received wherein the air driving means and chamber are configured and arranged so that the coffee beans circulate generally horizontally about the periphery of the chamber, thus providing a device which is quieter and uses less energy. The coffee beans may be moved by the heated air to an outlet. A controller configured to implement a number of different process profiles may also be provided. The device may also comprise coffee grinding and brewing means (figure 5). Packaging for green coffee beans comprising a detachable filter for the device is also described.
