PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for propagating Chinese yam preventing intermix between propagules of different stocks and reducing the number of years required for growing up the propagules and harvesting Chinese yams as commercial products.
SOLUTION: The method for propagating Chinese yam includes: making a stem 4 growing from the parent stock of the Chinese yam creep over the ground covering grown propagules 8 with soil and sprouting roots 11 such as absorptive roots and storage roots from the propagules 8 while the propagules 8 are joined to the stem 4 to grow the Chinese yam. The method includes forming a seedling bed 6 made by mounding soil in the vicinity of the parent stock to grow the stem 4 from the parent stock creep on the seedling bed 6, and fixing appropriate portions of the stem 4 to the seedling bed 6 using fixing tools 7. Fixation of the stem 4 to the seedling bed 6 is preferably performed just after the propagules 8 are produced. The Chinese yam grown from each of the propagules 8 is transplanted next year, and the Chinese yam grown in the year is further split up to plant the split one as a seed tuber in the year after planted.
