The present invention relates to a novel use of an extract of Cimicifuga species, preferably Cimicifuga racemosa (Actaea racemosa L； also called black cohosh). In particular, the present invention relates to an extract of the genus Cimicifuga, preferably Cimicifuga racemosa, for use in the therapeutic or prophylactic treatment of diabetes, preferably type 2 diabetes, the use of such an extract for the preparation of a medicament.
