The invention relates to a medical device for extracting fragments of urinary calculi from the ureter and to a method for using such a device. The device is characterized in that it comprises irrigation equipment (8, 11) positioned behind the expandable element (2) in relation to the end of the catheter (1) introduced first into the tract, said equipment (8, 11) spraying an irrigation liquid against the expandable element (2) in order to extract the fragments of calculi which flow out of the tract towards the proximal end of the catheter (1) while said element (2) is in the expanded state and at least partially blocking the tract.
